For GDPR purposes, Vegan Census acts as the controller of personal data processed through this website.

Data we collect
- Account/sign-in data: your email address and authentication session details.
- Census response data: date of birth fields, country, nearest city (optional), vegan date, and optional demographic fields.
- Optional preference data: mailing list choices and marketing-offer consent choices.
- Technical data: minimal local storage preferences (for example cookie preference state).
Special category data
Some optional census fields (such as religion and ethnicity) may be special category personal data under Article 9 GDPR. You provide these fields voluntarily. If you choose to provide them, you consent to processing for aggregated community research and reporting.
Purposes and lawful bases
- Run account authentication and prevent duplicate/spam submissions: Article 6(1)(f) legitimate interests.
- Store and analyze census responses in aggregated form: Article 6(1)(a) consent and/or Article 6(1)(f) legitimate interests.
- Process optional special category fields (for example religion and ethnicity): Article 9(2)(a) explicit consent.
- Send optional mailing-list or offer emails: Article 6(1)(a) consent.
- Maintain essential site functionality and security: Article 6(1)(f) legitimate interests.
How we use and share data
- We use census responses to produce aggregated trends and statistics.
- We do not publish personal profiles.
- We use service providers (for example hosting, authentication, and database services) under contractual safeguards and data-processing terms.
- We do not sell personal data.
International transfers
Where data is processed outside the UK/EEA, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses or equivalent legal transfer mechanisms provided by our processors.
Retention
- Census account-linked entries are retained until you delete them through your profile or request deletion.
- Mailing-list preference records are retained until you unsubscribe or request erasure.
- Technical preference data in local storage remains on your device until cleared or changed.
Your GDPR rights
- Right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, and portability.
- Right to object to processing based on legitimate interests.
- Right to withdraw consent at any time where consent is the lawful basis.
- Right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority (for example the UK ICO).
Cookies and local storage
We use essential local storage to remember core app and consent choices. Optional analytics preferences are off by default unless accepted. You can change your cookie preferences at any time using the "Cookie settings" control available on the site.
